Prostatitis

Prostatitis is typically a condition that involves inflammation of the prostate and sometimes the area around it. There are four types of prostatitis, each with a range of symptoms.

  • Acute bacterial prostatitis
  • Chronic bacterial prostatitis
  • Chronic prostatitis without infection
  • Asymptomatic inflammatory prostatitis

Signs and Symptoms

The symptoms depend on the type of prostatitis infection the patient is suffering from. Common symptoms include:

  • Chills
  • Fever
  • Severe burning during urination
  • Inability to empty the bladder
  • Painful urination

Causes

The major causes of prostatitis include:

  • Rectal intercourse
  • Abnormal urinary tract
  • Recent bladder infection
  • Enlarged prostate

Treatment

Treatments can include:

  • Anti-inflammatory medicines along with warm sitz baths
  • Antibiotic medicine for infectious prostatitis
  • Pain medications.
  • Muscle relaxants
  • Surgical removal of the infected portions of the prostate
  • Supportive therapies for chronic prostatitis, including stool softeners and prostate massage
