HEALTH TIPS
  • Always drink filtered/boil water and wash the hands often with running water for 20 seconds. Avoid drinking tap water.
  • Avoid raw/uncooked food during your stay. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Do not eat hot or very spicy food. They can create stomach upset. Stay away from salads also as leaves if not cleaned properly can contain tiny bugs.
  • Eat from good, clean restaurants and don’t try your luck with roadside vendors.
PREVALENT COMMON DISEASES IN NEPAL
Diarrhea - Traveller’s Diarrhea is the most common problem encountered because of drinking contaminated water.
High Altitude Sickness - Should be aware of high altitude sickness and try to take all precautions as mentioned on right hand side.
Flu or Cold - Identify the difference between cold or flu. Sore throat and sneezing usually point to a cold. Fever and aches may point towards the flu.
Malaria and Japanese Encephalitis - If you are travelling to Terai region during mosquito breeding season, vaccinate yourself with Japanese Encephalitis. Use mosquito repellent /mosquito net to avoid Malaria.
Hepatitis A: Hepatitis A is transmitted differently, and is usually less serious than, Hepatitis B. The organism is common in Nepal and is spread by contaminated Food and Water.
Hepatitis B: This is spread by infected person’s blood coming in contact with your own thorough cuts, re-used needles, blood transfusion, swallowing, sex, inhalation, etc.
Typhoid: This disease is highly prevalent in Nepal. It makes people severely ill and recovery may take several weeks.
Meningitis: The risk is low in short term travellers, but the disease is serious.
Tetanus & Diphtheria: The Tetanus and Diphtheria germs are also prevalent in Nepal. 
Tuberculosis: This contagious disease is also present in Nepal. Kindly avoid standing close to a person who is coughing too much.
Cholera: This water borne disease can be avoided by staying in clean place, drinking clean water and avoiding house flies.

HIGH ALTITUDE SICKNESS
Altitude sickness - also known as acute mountain sickness (AMS), altitude illnesshypobaropathy, or soroche - is a pathological effect of high altitude on humans, caused by acute exposure to low pressure of oxygen at high altitude.
Acute mountain sickness can progress to High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) or High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE), which are potentially fatal.
 
Causes
-  Less availability of oxygen at high altitude.
-  Dehydration due to the higher rate of water vapor loss from the lungs.
-  Altitude sickness usually occurs following a rapid ascent.

Primary Symptoms                                                
  • Lack of appetite, nausea, or vomiting
  • Fatigue or weakness        
  • Insomnia                          
  • Shortness of breath          
  • Persistent rapid pulse       
  • General malaise               
  • Peripheral edema (swelling of hands, feet, and face)
  • Dizziness or light-headedness
  • Needles and Pins
  • Nose bleed
  • Drowsiness
  • Diarrhea 
Severe Symptoms
Symptoms that may indicate life-threatening altitude sickness include:
-   Pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs):
-   Cerebral edema (swelling of the brain):

Prevention
-   Ascending slowly is the best way to avoid altitude sickness.
-   Avoiding alcohol consumption in the first 24-hours at a higher altitude. 

Altitude acclimatization
Altitude acclimatization is the process of adjusting to decreasing levels at higher elevations, in order to avoid altitude sickness.
